Vasant or Basant Panchami falls on the 5th day of the Magha month according to the Hindu calendar.
This vibrant festival usually takes place between February and March, marking the arrival of the beautiful spring season.
The word Vasant translates to Spring in English, while Panchami means the 5th day, which explains why the festival is celebrated on this particular day. But why is Vasant Panchami so significant? It’s not just the arrival of spring—this festival is deeply associated with the worship of Goddess Saraswati, the embodiment of knowledge, music, and arts. Hindus across the world perform rituals in her on this day.
Additionally, Vasant Panchami marks the beginning of preparations for the upcoming festival of Holi, so people start gearing up for the colorful celebrations ahead. Isn’t that exciting?

Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring, often called the King of all seasons. It coincides with the ripening of agricultural fields, particularly mustard flowers, which bloom in vibrant yellow. The color yellow plays a major role in the festivities, as it is believed to be the favorite color of Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and learning. During this time, people wear yellow clothes, enjoy yellow sweets, and decorate their homes with yellow flowers to celebrate the season of renewal.
Did you know? There are 18 harvest festivals celebrated in India, and Vasant Panchami is one of them! This day is also dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the epitome of creative energy, wisdom, learning, music, and arts. In many households, children begin their educational journey with the ritual of Vidyarambham or Aksharabhyasam, where they write their first letters or words. It’s considered a sacred day for adults as well, particularly those embarking on creative or intellectual pursuits.
On Vasant Panchami, devotees perform Saraswati Puja to seek divine blessings for wisdom and to overcome ignorance. The puja is a special occasion for children to start their educational journey, with many schools and colleges organizing prayers and rituals to invoke the Goddess's grace. It is also regarded as an Abuja, an auspicious time to begin new and important tasks.
To celebrate Vasant Panchami and perform Saraswati Puja at home, follow these steps:
